How to Vote in 2020

ART DIRECTION PROJECT MANAGEMENT

As states made unprecedented changes in their voting laws and requirements in response to the pandemic and impending general election, we at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee grew concerned that voters, especially young or first-time voters, would effectively be disenfranchised for not being aware of their state’s complex requirements. Our solution was a “story” comprised of a series of 51 compact, easily screenshottable, one-page guides that plainly laid out every relevant deadline and voting requirement in each US state plus Washington, DC. Our team produced an introductory video as well, and the full series was posted on Snapchat and Instagram.

PROCESS

I led the project management and art direction for this project. The creative team conducted extensive research to compile and fact-check current voting requirements in all 50 states and Washington, DC, entering their data into a spreadsheet that I then formatted for consistent verbiage.

I made the state-specific backgrounds in Photoshop, and the templates in InDesign. After much careful setup of guides and extendable text frames, I ran a data merge that pulled both the spreadsheet data and background images into place. I then manually adjusted elements where needed and exported all “pages” in the file to their final PNG forms to be uploaded on Instagram and Snapchat.
